Pemungut sampah/Scavengers : We can contribute!

This is a story in Kuala Terengganu. House to house waste collection still cannot be done fully. Most of the residential areas still depends on communal bins system.

Normally there are always scavengers seen in almost all communal municipal waste bin centered in our residential areas. If it's not too much to ask, please spare a bag for recyclables which we separate from other waste we generate in our home. When it's time we send our waste to these bins, we dispose them together, it's okay at least we improve our way and help.  Some of us are demotivated as even though they do separate their waste, the waste will end up mix with other waste as there is no specific recycle bins/ transfer station/separation facilities provided by authority. Everything fated to be buried in landfill. Most of us didn't separate our waste, moreover send them to recycling center due to the reason that it is impractical (little amount) and/or unworthy of sending (highest percentage of reason why people don't recycle is the fact that recycling facility is too far from where they live).

To date, other than license to scavenge in landfill that are issued, there is no specific law in our country that hinder these scavengers from exploring  communal bin. We have no idea how much these people depends on their recyclable items collected to afford their day to day basis expenses. This is apart of deeds. Put aside for a while the aspects of safety and health (these are two aspects always been debated besides aesthetic value for those who cannot withstand the sight of this act). Sometimes we need to be blind and deaf for the helpless. Or something can be actually be done to help this people; in terms to assist them in assuring those two aspects no longer an issue. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a "decent" job. I also think that this group of people that drive the concept "waste to wealth" or at least "waste to source of fortune".

We are approaching compulsory waste separation that will be implemented in the whole nation anyway. Practise makes perfect. It's not easy but eventually becomes a habit. Killing two birds with one stone; these -  waste separation and appease the scavengers. In a bigger picture, amount of waste needs to be sent to landfill can be lessened. A journey of a thousand miles begin with a single step. We can make a difference.

If others didn't understand, we must make them understand, and yet we can still unite with each other, peacefully, without prejudice.

In the name of justice, I don't agree with the PUNISHMENT. I'm sure they're repenting. They're so many other diplomatic way to handle this. Yes this are lessons learnt for others. I too agree this is such a wake up call for us on how we should look at this similar matter with second, third, forth, endless thought on how openness in wrong terms lead to mislead. But still, it is unfair. I don't concur.
